Sunset Beach Run + Skookum Dog

I'm a big believer in quality products. I like knowing where my food was grown, buying one-of-a-kind pieces from artists and supporting small businesses. I wish I could say I do this with completely altruistic intentions, but the fact is, it feels good to do it! I like knowing that I am helping someone out there to keep their dream alive.

One of the things I love about social media is how it really allows brands to come alive, whether you are a big company with a large marketing budget or a newcomer with tight funds. I'm sure many of you follow them on Instagram and Facebook. Every once in a while I come across a brand that promotes an adventurous lifestyle that mirrors my own, and I'm hooked. After watching this video by Skookum Dog, I knew it was one of those brands.

I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Skookum Dog and to show you just how amazing their 100% USA-made dog gear is.

The best way to really get a good feel for any gear is to take it to the lab. And by take it to the lab, I mean hit the trails. So we packed up the pups, and set out to give the Bungee Dog Leash a go.

When we adopted Daisy, she was a year old and already the perfect dog--no training and no leashes necessary. Despite her tendency to be a "velcro dog," lately she has started to take her sweet time returning to my side when called. Normally I don't even carry a leash with me, but now I've begun the new rule that if she doesn't come when called the first time, it's time to get leashed up.

For someone who hates carrying a purse around, let alone a leash, the Bungee Dog Leash is a great size and really light. Though Daisy does love a good squirrel chase, when on a leash there is nothing but slack, so at first I thought the bungee feature wasn't necessary for us. But I quickly found that even for a dog who doesn't pull much, it can still make a huge difference when they want to linger on an especially fragrant bush. The bungee allows you to give your dog the signal to get moving without any harsh pulls on their neck.

40" was a perfect leash length for us; there was no need to wrap the leash around my hand a couple of times to keep her at an appropriate distance. Another cool product that fits perfectly with the leash is the Guardian Dog Safety Light, which fits on collars and leashes and works as a flashing beacon to keep you safe from traffic or to help you keep tabs on your dog when she's running around at night.

We ended our test hike at the beach. We took off the leashes, and the dogs sprinted to the water for an icy drink. While the dogs barked at the buoy, we sat on the beach and watched another epic Tahoe sunset. Sometimes I can't even believe how lucky I am to get to spend so much time here. Though the lack of snow this year is a huge bummer, the silver lining is that we continue to have gorgeous days for hiking and exploring. Stay tuned for some more great Skookum Dog products being put to use in the Great Outdoors.
